UDMR chairman Kelemen Hunor said on Friday that magistrates who criticize the emergency ordinance amending the laws of justice are right, criticizing the government for the content of the normative act and for giving up the principle of separation of careers for judges and prosecutors.
Asked by journalists before the UDMR Congress in Cluj-Napoca, commenting on the protests of magistrates, Kelemen Hunor said he understood prosecutors and judges who came out to protest because it is not good what happened.
“Not about protests, but I have a problem with Emergency Ordinance no. 7 and those who criticize it are right. In 2017 and 2018, I personally and UDMR supported the separation of judges from prosecutors’ career and I think I did a good thing, a right one. I have argued that within the Superior Council of Magistracy, the prosecutor’s office should deal with prosecutors, judges with judges and the career of the two categories in the magistracy. Now you come and say you have to reverse this again, I do not see the reasoning. It is a mistake to change the rule after one year, I do not think the Government has proposed a good thing with this ordinance. I understand the prosecutors and judges who came out today (Friday – n.r.) to protest, because it is not good what happened”, Kelemen said, quoted by Mediafax.
He pointed out that he did not know why this haste and why they changed the optics, the Justice Minister or someone else, because he was convinced that what was done with the separation of careers was fine and should have stayed like this. “You can not change without any explanation what we voted for last year regarding the career of prosecutors and judges”, the UDMR president said.
