Kelemen Hunor: We will mobilize for the European elections and also for the referendum

UDMR will mobilize its voters for both the European elections and the referendum, Kelemen Hunor told to Masol. (Maszol? Nem tudom lehet elfelejtettel egy z betut ) We asked the Federal President: what kind of position will he take in the presidency ,when the head of state invites the parties to a referendum on 26th of May.

As already it is known, Klaus Iohan.nis confirmed on Monday that he will hold a referendum on the European Parliament elections’ day He did not communicate the exact subject of the referendum, but he has just announced that he will expand the initial issue of the judiciary and wants to consult with the Parliament and parliamentary parties individually.

Kelemen Hunor said that the UDMR delegation will participate in the consultation initiated by Klaus Iohannis because he considers important the dialogue between the primary institutions of the state, irrespective of the personality of the president. Kelemen reminded that in 2009, on the day of European elections, Traian Basescu, the former president of Romania, made a referendum, but he was not interested in the opinion of the parties and the institutions. “He presented himself in Parliament, gave us a short speech. Then he said that he finished the consultation and left “- reminded the events of 2009 the federal president.

“I’m not against the referendum”

Since the exact subject of the referendum is not yet known, the position of the party is not clearly determined, but it is not against the organization of a referendum – said Kelemen. “There are basically no referendum issues. I am not against the referendum, with certain limits, which are also registered by the constitution and by democratic practice. I am convinced that it is important for people to be asked for the right path, especially in such a confusing period. I also support both local and regional referendum”- declared the politician.

Klaus Iohannis has the right to hold a referendum even on election day for the European Parliament, as decided by the Constitutional Court. He added that in 2009, Traian Basescu organized a referendum on the day of the European Parliament elections, the recommendation of the Venice Commission was: it is preferable not to hold a referendum on the same day as the elections.

From Kelemen Hunor’ s point of view the subject of the referendum must be very general and political if the president wants to get an answer about justice. “If it’s technical, I think Klaus Iohannis will make a mistake. To answer for a technical question, voters need prior training, which is not possible when we talk about a referendum, “he explained.

The DAHR also opposes Emergency Ordinances

Kelemen said that the UDMR agrees with Klaus Johannis that it should be strictly regulated where the government could apply Emergency Ordinances, to be debated immediately by the Parliament, to be discussed later. He added that the union will remain consistent also during the consultation with the president.

“UDMR has a long-standing position on this issue. We would have removed from the Constitution the possibility of applying the Emergency Ordinances. This would be possible only during the parliamentary holiday or in extraordinary cases”, he explained.

He reminded that the UDMR was against Justice Ordinances, also in the case of amending the criminal law. “I said earlier: if the government wants the faster change of the judiciary, it is in its willingness to assume responsibility before Parliament. That possibility was also used by the Boc government, “he said.

“We will mobilize”

As is well known, the result of the UDMR in the elections to the European Parliament is negatively affected by the high participation rate of the Romanian voters. Regarding the possibility of an unfavorable election referendum, Hunor Kelemen said that UDMR shouldmobilize its voters by May 26.

“Irrespective of the referendum, there is always the possibility that Romanians’ participation in the elections may have negative effects on the participation of the Hungarians. The only solution: we must mobilize the voters and we must tell them to go to vote. Therefore, we will also mobilize for the European elections and for the referendum that will be organized by Klaus Iohannis “- declared the president of UDMR.
