The Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) started the process of leaving the European People’s Party (EPP) because of Viktor Orban’s party, according to an announcement posted on the party’s website.
The decision was taken unanimously on Sunday by one of the party’s unions and will be validated by the Croatian leaders in March.
“We can not stand alongside leaders like Viktor Orban who are trying to propagate hate,” one of the party leaders said.
Orban has launched a government-funded advertising campaign in which he is harshly attacking European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker because he is a supporter of illegal immigration. The posters show Juncker alongside George Soros, another target of FIDESZ. The campaign has sparked protests among several EPP member parties.
The chairman of the Committee on Budgetary Control of the European Parliament, MEP Ingeborg Gräßle, proposed the exclusion of FIDESZ from the European People’s Party, writes nepszava.hu, quoted by Rador.
Ingeborg Gräßle is the first German Christian Democrat in the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) delegation – made up of 34 German MEPs – who openly pleaded for this “partition” after the Hungarian Government again launched a public information campaign against the EU and the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker.
The Swedish Moderate Party also announced that it would insist on excluding FIDESZ from the European People’s Party because of Viktor Orban’s campaign against Commission President Jean Claude Junker.
