A former communist-era Hungarian spy who has worked in Austria and West Germany is the new head of the Hungarian Foreign Intelligence Service, reports the Budapest press. Jozsef Czukor was the chief foreign policy advisor of Prime Minister Viktor Orban until the 1st of October, who also propelled him to the head of the secret service.
Jozsef Czukor is considered a close relative of Russia, according to Hungarian portal Index.hu and Zoom.hu. He seems to have intensively worked with the Soviet secret services during communism, when the secret services of the Warsaw Pact states were virtually subordinated to the KGB.
Czukor’s appointment comes amid the constant rapprochement between Viktor Orban and Vladimir Putin and Hungary’s tough attacks on the European Union. Moreover, a former head of Hungarian services warned a year ago that NATO partners are extremely reluctant to work with Hungary because of fears that Budapest shares sensitive information with Moscow.
Czukor also served as head of Foreign Spy (IH) during 2002-2004. He started his spy career in Austria and West Germany, then became a diplomat and was the ambassador of Hungary to Slovenia and Germany.
