Valentin Popa resigned at noon on Thursday after he refused Liviu Dragnea’s request to sign an ordinance to cancel the effects of an order criticized by the DAHR, told G4Media.ro sources from the SDP and the Government. Practically, Popa refused to return to the August 23rd OG that prompted the DAHR to temporarily denounce the parliamentary collaboration protocol with the SDP.
Popa was Thursday morning at Liviu Dragnea’s office in the Chamber of Deputies. Dragnea said they had discussed the issue of the Romanian language teaching in minority classes and admitted that “this time Kelemen Hunor was right.”
Popa did not want to make Liviu Dragnea’s political game in the relationship with DAHR, especially since he was convinced that he would be the target of reshuffle in two weeks, according to sources G4Media.ro.
Moreover, Valentin Popa said after resignation that “Romanian is not negotiable”, according to Realitatea TV.
The original OG promoted by Valentin Popa forbade Hungarian teachers to teach Romanian if they did not have a university degree, which led to a real rebellion of parents and teachers from areas with national minorities.
DAHR chairman Kelemen Hunor said Wednesday that the subject of parliamentary collaboration on legislative projects with SDP-ALDE can not be opened until the issue of teaching Romanian language in general schools with teaching in the mother tongue is solved.
On Wednesday, Kelemen Hunor said “it is not about renewing the protocol of collaboration with the governing coalition. When I signed, I signed for 4 years, and if someone does not interrupt it (the collaboration – n.r.), it is in effect. We, in each session, do an analysis. At this point, I said that until the issue in the August Ordinance is resolved, that article on the teaching of Romanian language and literature in general school, primary classes, we can not open any other subject. I hope that this week will be resolved and then, of course, we can take the legislative priorities and of them, and of ours, we can discuss further details. Until then, there is no such thing. Until this issue is solved in the August simple ordinance. ”
We recall that the ordinance that upsets the education of minorities and led to the resignation of the Minister of Education was made by one of the advisory groups around Liviu Dragnea, not the ministry. According to the cited sources, the ordinance was the negotiating coin with which Liviu Dragnea tried to buy the support of the DAHR government. Paradoxically, the ordinance had the opposite effect and led to the loss of Union support.
