Szeklers are not an ethnic group but an organic part of the Hungarian nation, said a researcher at the Institute for the Study of Minorities at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences on Tuesday, according to MTI.
The Institute has stated its position on this issue after a private person initiated a procedure as the Szeklers to be recognized as part of the nation, said researcher Balazs Dobos at M1.
Parliament will have the final say through a vote on amending the national minority law, he said.
The original initiative required a thousand signatures and the position of the Institute for the Study of Minorities was also requested.
The Institute said that they determined the Szeklers were part of the nation when they were separated from Hungary, Balazs Dobos said, according to MTI.
If a community is part of the Hungarian nation, it can not be a minority at the same time, he added.
