The Hungarian government has made a decision that has further cooled relations with the US, the Direkt3.hu investigation site reports. The Budapest Foreign Ministry refused to extradite to US two Russian traffickers selling weapons to Mexican cartels that were to be used even against the US armed forces.
Instead of extradition to the US, where the two arms dealers expected their life imprisonment, the Orban-led government sent them to Russia, according to the investigation.
The judicial process in Hungary – where Vladimir Lyubishin and his son were captured in a joint operation with the US – lasted two years, at the end of which Hungarian justice approved both US and Russian extradition requests. The final decision was taken by the Foreign Ministry, which sent arms dealers to Russia.
The weapons purchased by the two Russians from the Hungarian and EU armies were to arrive at a Mexican drug cartel in the US that would have used them in the confrontations with US agents.
A diplomatic source told Direkt3.hu that the Budapest decision has sent a clear message to all NATO allies: no one can trust Hungary anymore.
This episode adds to other diplomatic and political defiance from Hungary to the US: the haulting of the University opened by George Soros and the hindering of a closer relationship between NATO and Ukraine. In fact, Viktor Orban has become in the last years an outspoken ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Hungary is considered a Trojan horse of Russia in the EU and NATO.
