One of the terrestrial ramifications of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline could pass through Hungary, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday in a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on a visit to Moscow, as reported by EFE and MTI.
“We are examining the possibility of linking our Hungarian partners to the new Russian gas transport routes to Europe. I do not exclude that a terrestrial branch of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline could cross through Hungary”, said Putin, writes agerpres.ro.
The Kremlin leader reminded that Russia covers 60% of Hungary’s natural gas demand, while Prime Minister Orban insisted his country is very interested in the Turkish Stream gas pipeline going into its territory.
Hungary appreciates relations with Russia, both countries “having an interest in maximizing common achievements,” said Viktor Orban in the joint press conference.
It is in the national interest of Hungary that there is “good cooperation between the two halves of Europe”, including good relations between Hungary and Russia, he highlighted.
As for energy co-operation, Orban said he had reached an agreement with Putin on Russian gas supply after 2020.
The two leaders also discussed the project by Russia’s Rosatom to build two new reactors at the Paks nuclear power plant, Orban stating this to be implemented according to the timetable with the necessary adjustments.
According to a joint initiative with Prime Minister Orban, an intergovernmental committee for coordination of bilateral cooperation will be set up, the first meeting planned to take place before the end of the year, said the Russian president.
