Bundestag’s Chairman of the European Affairs Committee, Gunther Krichbaum, said in an interview with HotNews.ro that the recent slippages of Darius Vâlcov and Liviu Pop affect the German-Romanian relations and the fact that the government did not delineate them shows that it accepts them. In his opinion, the presidency of the EU Council that Romania will hold next year seems to have “failed before it even started.” Krichbaum also said that, given the recent events in Romania, it is clear that the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism can not be lifted, adding that German investors are discouraged.
Krichbaum referred to the post of Darius Vâlcov, in which President Klaus Iohannis appears as Hitler, but also to the recent statement of PSD Senator Liviu Pop, chair of the Education Commission, according to which the German Forum was the continuation of a Nazi group, the German Ethnic Group .
“The recent sideslips represent the sad apogee of a dispute that has lost the sense of the measure, and these people (Vâlcov and Pop – nr) have become intolerable in their positions. Several red lines were overcome, including by criticizing the German Forum, which was presented as the continuation of Nationalist Socialism. It should be noted that the use of the swastika and other anti-constitutional symbols in Germany is a crime. “Since the Romanian Government has not clearly distanced itself from all this, it seems reasonable to suppose it deliberately accepts if it does not control them,” Kirchbaum said.
“As a result, (these facts) cause serious damage to good German-Romanian relations,” he added.
Being asked how he sees these behaviors in the context in which Romania will take over the presidency of the Council of the European Union, he replied:
“In addition to affecting the good German-Romanian relations, this leads to an even greater loss of prestige for the Romanian government at international level. Moreover, due to the events occasioned by Laura Kovesi’s revocation and the fact that the anti-corruption laws were amended , Romania is under close supervision of the European Commission, so it is very clear to me that MCV can not be concluded. For the Presidency of the Council of the European Union that follows (in 2019 – n.r.), these are not good signs. The presidency seems to fail even before it starts. ”
Asked how he sees the future EU Presidency held by Romania, given the changes in the legislation in the field of justice and the protests of 10 August, Krichbaum warned that German investors are “discouraged”:
“The EU Presidency is a huge opportunity for Romania if it is wisely used. Unfortunately, at this time it does not seem to be the case.” Taking into consideration the many European problems, we would need a Council presidency to be respected on a large scale.
Also, recent events should not be underestimated: German investors are discouraged. The rule of law is the subject of concern. What gives me hope at the same time is that much of the Romanian population is pro-European and publicly demonstrates this. ”
In February, Gunther Krichbaum sent a letter to Jean Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission, asking him not to suspend the application of the MCC on Justice in Romania. See here details

PSD Senator Liviu Pop said on 23rd of August that President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, led an organization that is a continuation of a Nazi German forum. “I think that even so much gram of national consciousness has Mr. President Iohannis. Because in fact the postponement of the budgetary rectification means the non-payment of some money by certain public institutions and the non-supplementation of the funds for other public institutions, which has the effect of budget deficit. I have to say that he (Klaus Iohannis-nr) makes a hypocritical charge from the perspective of August 23rd and in the perspective of his former dignity, that of the president of a continuation of a Forum … of the … Nazi organization. He led the German forum (Iohannis-nr), that was the continuation of the group we know clearly was publicly condemned… “, Liviu Pop told Antena 3, according to Mediafax.
After the allegations made, PSD Senator did not want to assume them, claiming that he took information from the Internet.
“This is not what I say, but rather what others say, I read it in the press, I saw it clearly.” The German ethnic group was a Nazi organization, right? “The German ethnic group was a Nazi war crimes condemnation organization in Nurnberg. If the German Forum is not the follower of the German Ethnic Group, I officially wait for these things, I said what I read from the net, but on August 23 to make statements like this and in the Centenary year, it seems to me a bit off from the head of state , who must be a mediator, “added Pop.
It is also Liviu Pop who published on Facebook an illustration in which the USA, Germany, Austria and the Netherlands appear as beetles that invade Romania, declaring later that they have no reason to apologize because the President was Klaus Johannis.
On Monday, Darius Vâlcov, the premier’s state advisor, published on Facebook a clip in which the symbol of the Resist community is turned into a swastika, and President Klaus Iohannis is turned into Hitler, along with the text “Hail Iohannis!” .
