Roxana Maracineanu, the new french Minister of Sport : Thank you for France, such a welcoming country!

France’s new sports minister, Roxana Maracineanu, thanked her adoptive country for receiving her after she fled from Romania, AFP informs.

“Thank you very much to France and this so welcoming republic, which I am happy to serve. There is no better way to get back to France what she gave me since my arrival from Romania in 1984 at the age of nine. When my parents were the same age as I am, they did not know a word in French, they did not know anyone here. I thank them for allowing me and my brother to live our lives freely. I never thought I would get here when I saw myself in Bretania, in a refugee integration center”, said Roxana Maracineanu, when she took up her job.

Asked by the decreasing resources of the ministry she is to lead, Roxana Maracineanu said that her “belief” was always to do the best with the means at its disposal.

She was also questioned about France’s goal at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, 80 medals, set by her predecessor Laura Flessel, but considered absurd by sportsmen.

“In what I am interested more is represented by what we will put into practice to succeed. I do not want to look at the announced numbers. I do not even know if I’ll let others know, even if it’s a habit to announce. I want to focus on what we will do in order to get there”, she said.

The french Minister of Sport this year had a budget of 481.6 million euros, down by 7 percent compared to 2017. In the budget rectification, it also received 30 million euros, reaching only 1, 1 percent versus last year. But for 2019, a budget cut of 6.2 percent is announced again.

World Champion 200 meters behind 1998 and 2000 Olympic vice-champion Roxana Maracineanu was nominalized Sports Minister in the French Government on Tuesday, replacing Laura Flessel.

Laura Flessel, a former fake champion, resigned on Tuesday for personal reasons. She was minister in the government of Édouard Philippe on May 17, 2017.

Laura Flessel is a double sword champion and six times world champion, with a record and European title.
