UDMR poll: Hungarians in Romania are completely disconnected from the Romanian press and adhere to Viktor Orban’s anti-EU messages

An opinion poll commissioned by UDMR shows that Hungarians in Romania have virtually ceased to be informed from Romanian television broadcasts, according to the Hungarian official agency MTI.

Thus, the media consumption habits of the Transylvanian Hungarians have changed radically in the last decade and a half: while TV programs in Hungarian have been followed, for a long time, by 25% of them, this proportion has grown to 75%, while watching Romanian programs have dropped from 50% to 10%.

Along with the decoupling of the Romanian-language press, Hungarians from Transylvania take over the messages sent by the government of Viktor Orban through the iron-controlled press in Budapest. Thus, Transylvanian Hungarians reject non-European immigrants in a higher proportion than the Romanian majority (83% vs. 59%) and are less confident in the European Union than most Romanians (37% vs. 55%), according to MTI.

Sociologist Gergő Barna explained to MTI that this may be imputed to the fact that the adherence failed to meet the economic expectations of the respondents, and that the European Union did not assume the ethnic minority issues at the expected level. The result may also be influenced by the anti-Brussels messages of the Hungarian government, the sociologist said.

The opinion poll commissioned by UDMR was presented on Thursday in Cluj-Napoca by sociologists Gergő Barna and Tamás Kiss and Bálint Porcsalmi, the executive president of the UDMR, said MTI.
