Steriu returns to PSD

On Tuesday, the deputy Valeriu Steriu announced that he left PMP (People Movement Party) because for him follows “the end of experiments and coming home from political point of view”.

” I have approximately a decade of experience with political projects under construction (UNPR) or in development (PMP), I have numerous rounds of elections where I saw that also in politics the saying, which states that not obtaining the mark of 10 is the hardest, but getting a 5, is true. In the case of elections, 5%. I chose, knowingly and responsibly, to contribute to the stability in the Parliament. I return to my political family, PSD. I come back to the PSD group in the Chamber of Deputies. The opposition does not want unity, is more happy due to small victories in sparse groups. In these conditions, I think that a parliamentarian’s duty, that represents every Romanian citizen, is to see the beyond their task: to propose laws and to sustain everything that is constructing and in the interest of citizens and the society. With PSD and along with PSD I attended at the integration of Romania to EU, to NATO, at the consolidation of economy and at the increase of the overall wellbeing of the population, which has an upward trajectory since 2001. It is not a little thing and I am happy to return to do what I can do best, along with the party which has always offered me the chance to put my knowledge and skills in the service of society”, argumented the deputy.

According to him, “these are complicated times for all of us, and in these times we have the obligation to be responsible”.

“We have expectations that need to be fulfilled and high challenges to which we have to rise. We have the obligation to give the best of us, with political maturity, professional seriousness and personal responsibility. We have the obligation to oppose those strategies, tactics and political misinformations that risk to throw Romania into a troubled darkness, in which the citizen in good faith remains ever more isolated, ever more lonely, confused and even more injected with hate. I have faith, that I am not the only one believing in such things and that they are more people who see what is happening now and choose to answer firmly and assumed to these lab strategies. I am convinced, that we can continue to build Romania and I dare to believe in Romania further on”, added Steriu.

He said that his leaving from PMP is not something what he wanted or what he did to please someone else, “but it is a necessary gesture to keep his self-esteem and respect intact” and he recalled the announcement made last week by the president of PMP, Traian Basescu, who denounced the fusion with UNPR.

“I drove UNPR to PMP in the sincere and honest faith that two little political projects might give birth to a medium-sized political project. And because I felt responsibility towards the thousands of elected and more than 150.000 voters. In these conditions some remarks and explanations are required. Once PMP had the deal with UNPR in the bag , they made their electoral threshold with the UNPR voters, the fusion is being prepared to be denounced. I think this says a lot more about PMP than about UNPR. The president, Basescu, announced this with clarity and bluntness, at the National Executive Committee last week.”, affirmed the deputy.

The PMP Congress, taking place on 16th of June, is starting the work with this denouncement, which is the first task on the list.

“It seems that they have been already waiting to get rid of us, after, one by one, the people with high value, like Cristian Diaconescu or Ion Toma had left or were removed. Once the PMP Congress will accept this proposition, practically it will validate the official separation of the two parties. What does this mean? In one word: liberty! Everyone from UNPR, who came along with PMP as simple members, local counselors or parliamentarians originating from the ex-UNPR who are still active in PMP groups have the liberty to choose once again a new political route”, mentioned Steriu.

He also added that in the actual form of PMP leadership, he remaind the last representant coming from the UNPR’s leadership, after the other colleagues were excluded or left as a form of protest “towards a party which does not succeed to deliver major political projects”.

“For those who jump to conclusions: no, I am not leaving the ship in times of storm. I am the last who leaves the sinking ship, whose captain refuses to captain”, said the former PMP leader.

Steriu claimed that the situation went south because of “many reasons”, but “few worth mentioning”.

“What is worth remembering is the motives about which there is an ongoing public conversation are false. Exactly like in the jokes with Radio Erevan, the obligations are not UNPR’s, but rather of PMP, and not 2 millions of Euro, but 2 millions of lei. Otherwise, the pre-consultation was not made in the party, and the subject was forced down the CEN members’ throats.  The real truth about PMP is the following: the president, Traian Basescu, announced that in 2020 he will withdraw from the political life, the members are more and more confused and tend to abandon the project that is abandoned by its founder as well. The party is preoccupied with its political self-isolation, making local alliances without any general political logic, but only based on advantages, that are valid today, but vanish tomorrow, the party dismisses good people, in conditions in which great names in the party, founding members, personalities or the electoral motors chose to search for their future elsewhere, without their replacement with people who have at least the same characteristics”.

He also mentions the First Deputy Cristian Diaconescu, First Deputy Siegfried Muresan, First Deputy Ion Toma, vicepresident Gelu Visan, and other numerous local leaders.

“In these conditions, PMP risks to become exhausted of human resource of quality and then the question arises: with whom is going to make PMP politics? And what kind of politics can you pursue at PMP?” asked him.

Steriu also states that it is worth mentioning the “fetishism of the relationship with Republic of Moldova, in conditions which the human resources were moved almost completely in the past 6 months, and the dividends of the investments were seen at the electoral campaigns in Chisinau on 20th of May: a little over 3.000 votes, below the electoral threshold”.

“It is clear that this was a mistaken decision, and it is obvious that “Moldova project” remains obscured and with results that were not assumed by the central management of the party. Another reality hidden under a great press from PMP. Everything points towards a single conclusion: Too little, too late, too mistaken. Way too little, way too late and way too mistaken for an existing future of PMP”, concluded Valeriu Steriu.
